This summer, why not count your blessings?
This summer, why not count your blessings?
In summer we generally fret
and fume about hot sun and sultry weather. I keep lamenting everyday that the temperature
– in Hyderabad - is touching 43+ degrees Celsius, or about that range. Reading the weather report and news how others
in neighbouring districts / states are faring leaves you all the more frustrated.
You take all precautions before venturing out for any work – wearing caps,
taking umbrella, drinking water etc. If we learn to count our blessings,
psychologically our sufferings will be low and bearable. Let me enumerate some of the advantages of
blistering hot weather.
- · Clothes dry up very fast; no need to put them for drying inside the house after evening.
- · Mosquitoes vanish; they cannot survive in that dry heat
- · Preparing Papad, Vadiyalu or Pickles is easy
- · Curtains and bed sheets may be washed and dried quickly
- · We can enjoy cold water bath – no hot water necessary - saves energy
- · Butter for bread melts easily
- · We can enjoy ice cream, various juices, deserts etc
- · No one can forget Mangoes, Munjal or Sugar Cane Juice
- · We can put off work involving moving around blaming it on the heat.
- · If at you stir out, you can enjoy traffic less roads
- · You can enjoy reading books in natural sun light
I can list out some more. But
why not you contribute?

World Elders Day - Hyderabad District Function - Tarnaka 4th October 2013
REPORT ON World
Elders day Celebrations on 4th October 2013
Tarnaka
Report by IVLN Chary
International day of Older Persons
was celebrated by Hyderabad dist of Government of Andhra Pradesh, Department of
the welfare of disabled & senior citizens from 10 AM on 4th October
2013 at Vijayapuri Colony Welfare Association, Tarnaka, Hyderabad. This
was from Hyderabad District exclusively.
The chief guest of the function was
Smt Rekharani, Addl. Joint collector, Hyderabad Dist. The proceeding were
conducted by Prof. Visveswaraiah. The other dignitaries on the dais were: Sri
Mital AISCCON, Sri L Kishan, RDO Secunderabad, Sri S. Das, Director State Head
Help Age India, Hyderabad, Sri B Linga reddy TCSCCON, Smt Radha
Ramaiah Secretary Mahila Dakshata Samithi, Smt Manjula Kalyan, Secretary
Swayam krushi an NGO for special children.
Smt Rekharani in her address
mentioned her own life as an illustration. Married to an IPS officer at the age
of 22, losing him at 23 as he was killed by naxals in Karimnagar dist and
returning to her parents who were government officials who took her in, gave
her hope, educated her till she was selected as an RDO in AP Govt. She said,
her son calls her parents as nanna and amma and her as akka. The boy won many
gold medals and now at 23 is in USA. All this was only possible due to her
parents guiding her and her son’s life. She is loath to use the term Senior
citizens and preferred the term “Super seniors “ She paid a
compliment to the seniors by comparing them to Hanuman who did not
realize his own strength till reminded. Seniors who have seen most of the ups
and downs of life are an asset to the community and have to be treated as such.
Then she honoured the following
seniors with a shawl and a memento. These seniors are from different walks of
life and contributed to the welfare of other seniors.

Tips from Traffic Police Department for Vehicle Drivers
Following advice, given by the traffic Police department (Hyderabad), to all vehicle drivers and pedestrians are so important that I am reproducing it with my comments at the end.
1. Keep on your left, allowing the vehicles from the opposite direction to pass.
2. Give way to traffic on your right, especially at road junctions and round abouts.
3. While turning either left or right, give way to vehicles going straight.
4. While turning left, keep to the left side and turn close to the left side of the road to which you enter.
5. Slow down at the junctions, intersections and pedestrian crossings. Also slow down near school zones, temple areas etc., where a lot of pedestrians and vehicle traffic move. Give signals before you make any maneuver, indicating your intention, so that the other road users can adjust accordingly.
6. At junctions, do not block the free lefts
7. In case traffic jams, be patient. Do not cross the median and block the opposite lane.
8. Always use a helmet if on a two-wheeler and always check that the strap is fixed properly.
9. Stick to the given speed limit and remember that speed limit is related to the traffic condition.
10. Keep enough distance from the vehicle ahead to avoid collision.
11. Yellow lines should not be crossed under any condition.
12. At junctions or intersections, never park the vehicle beyond the stop line.
13. At pedestrian crossings always remember that the pedestrian has the right of way.
14. At the signal, do not stop your vehicle on the Pedestrian Crossing.
15. Two-wheelers are meant only for two. Third person is not allowed, even children.
16. Do not move your vehicle on the amber light. Wait for the light to turn green.
17. Overtake only from the right side of a vehicle. Never overtake on bridges, narrow roads, junctions, school zones and pedestrian crossings.
18. Do not drive in a zig-zag manner.
19. Do not honk and create noise pollution
20. Do not spit on the roads
I like to stress for the information of all Vehicle drives point 13 above. I heard in a meeting on Traffic problems that we do not have any roads in Hyderabad, but only “maidans” or play grounds. How true! According to latest statistics, 98 pedestrians died in road accidents, as against 47 riders of two wheelers; wheras only 2 guys died in car accidents. Therefore it is riskiest to be a pedestrian!!
If public learns to co-operate with the Police things might improve, even at the lowest levels
