Answering Birthday Greetings

 Answering Birthday Greetings

On your birthday, if you have many friends and relatives, you will get a good number greetings, best wishes, blessings etc in the form of phone calls, SMS, WhatsApp messages, email or in person. Answering or responding to all such well-wishers politely and without much delay is a pleasant but equally tiresome task /chore.

A friend of mine with ‘moderate’ number of friends claims that he got 7000 calls on his birthday. Might be an exaggeration but answering even 70 phone calls on a single day is difficult to handle. As one who has joined the octogenarian club recently, I may narrate my experiences and misgivings. Apart from the happy feelings such callers shower on us, there are a couple of bothersome issues as well.  I will confine myself to phone calls here.

Sometimes you may not be able to quickly find out (fix) who exactly is the caller. If he says “This is Subba Rao calling” and he is not a frequent caller whose voice is familiar, I am at a loss to guess which Subba Rao is calling. My incomplete and ‘not-so-well-updated-Contacts-List’ contains more than six Subba Raos.

Sometimes, on such days, when you get a phone call, you expect it is someone greeting you and you blurt out “Thank You so much” or “It is very kind of you” etc even before it dawns on you that you have made a mistake!

You are so used to replying to phone-based greetings on New Year Day, Deepavali, Xmas and similar days that you almost always say “Wish the same to you”, “Hearty Reciprocations” etc – This could happen even when you get Birthday Greetings.

At times, a few friends start with birthday greetings but may start ‘catching up’ with you with a lot of info to share and find out since you met years ago. You may just have no time right then and may find yourself wondering how to escape. Sometimes, while I am on such a dilemma, I signal my daughter to go out and press the calling bell. That loud noise heard at the other end is helpful and you can say: “Someone guests have come so I will call you later” and disconnect.   Sometimes YOU may want to catch up with the caller and he might cut you short in the most unceremonious way, leaving you wonder why he called in the first place!

But then there ARE friends who know you will be busy and postpone ‘routine’ and not so important calls for a further time. There are those who matter-of-factly want to register that they have called and will be sharp to end the call soonest.  There are some who do not want to forget and might help you a lot by calling earlier, the previous day itself. These are WELL-WISHERS in capitals and to all such I bow my head doubly and reverentially.

In all above cases you may include she for he. With malice towards none, said all this in plain fun.

Mostly applicable to senior citizens, known for frailties of their own. He! He! He!

Sneezing

                                                      Sneezing

You tend to sneeze when hair follicles in your nostrils are tickled. One might sneeze involuntarily due to irritants in the nose. Bri ght sunlight, sex, odours, pepper particles in air etc could cause sneezing. There is plenty of literature telling how to ‘treat’ sneezing, stopping it etc. Pinching the nose, Tickling the back of your mouth with the tongue, blowing the nose are some suggestions.

However, I am interested in talking about self-induced sneezing on purpose.

You can sneeze at will by inserting a sharp pointed / twisted wet stiff cloth into the base of the nose. Sneeze would come with aloud explosive noise, squirting droplets of mucous filled liquid, all around. Why will anyone induce sneeze?  There are many advantages.

It clears the nose of irritants, viruses and bacteria and any preceding headache or heaviness in head would vanish. When you want to spoil (prevent) someone setting out on some important tasks, you can sneeze and he will abort his work, as sneezing at that time is supposed to be an ill omen.  An involuntary sneeze of a thief at an inappropriate moment could reveal his presence to all. When you are in the toilet, struggling to defecate, a good powerful sneeze (induced) will be useful to shakeup the entire abdominal muscles and make the task easier. When you have to enter a room where a couple is having a private moment, you may announce your presence by coughing or better a big sneeze.

All said, suppressing a sneeze might damage the ear drum or tear inner skin of the nostrils. One has to be very careful. So, to sneeze or not to sneeze is entirely up to you.

Shadow

Shadow

‘He followed me like a shadow’, I read somewhere in a crime thriller. That set me thinking. A shadow requires, at the minimum, a source of light, an object and a screen / surface to ‘catch’ the shadow. If you are observing a shadow, at any point of time, you are aware of one of these three and looking at all the three is very nearly impossible. If you are not a part, even as an observer, still shadows could be there, say for example, the occurrence of Eclipses.

What do you say about a shadow of someone, where there is no object? Can you call that a ghost? Are ghosts real or are shadows real? Both have no ‘body’. They are fleeting, moving, changing? If you are not aware of a shadow, does it still exist?  Are shadows always black? Can’t they be colourful, as in dreams?

In the first sentence, if you substitute, He with Death, scenario changes at once. Death is ALWAYS following everyone who is alive. It is behind you, chasing. When he would overtake and turn you into a ghost, nobody knows. Isn’t that intriguing? The source of light consumes you, vaporises you into nothing and DEATH alone remains!

Shadow is a negative word containing ‘sad’ in it. To get rid of your own shadow, either you must be in total darkness or be totally immersed in very bright light, so bright that even if a shadow is formed it gets overwritten by the light!

Dhobbi - our neighborhood Street Dog

Dhobbi - our neighborhood Street Dog

This is Dhobbi, our neighborhood street dog. His sibling is called Thukda. The dog is sleeping away precariously positioned, just on card board sheets covered with plastic.  He seems to say: I am only taking a light nap. He may be avoiding being run over or trying to evade dog catching squad. Isn't it time to get up, already 7:30 am?

Anyhow the "istriwalah"  who works in that garage - will arrive in another half an hour and the dog may be forced to get up / wake up. Until then, bye!

Which is the best option: Estate Planning question Question posed

ESTATE PLANNING - Question posed by Justice Rangarajan

  • A government pensioner gets half the current pay of the post he held and hardly spends it as he lives with his children. His medical expenditure is reimbursable.
  • He has a pension account with a bank and maybe another bank account for investment.
  • He has the following FD's
    • Senior Citizen Savings Scheme Rs 15 L
    • FD's in in banks
  • Investments in Mutual Fund for 80C - 1.5L per year
  • Other Mutual Funds
  • All assets are now held with the spouse as joint holder and son as nominee
  • What are the options for smoothly passing on the assets to the family?
    • Distribute all the assets and keep only pension account.
    • Open a PPF for 80C and stop investment in ELSS MF
    • Redeem all Mutual funds and re-invest in equal tranches nominating one person each - also make those investments in D'mat account for easy transmission
    • There will be the capital gains tax at 10% if all the mutual funds are redeemed. Is it worth paying the tax for redistribution of the assets?
    • Any other suggestion?

My Table Clock

My Table Clock

Watch this thirty second video on my alarm clock. You should notice that the seconds hand has stopped. Battery is dead. Clock has stopped. I look at this time piece during nights more, than during the day time. Between 10 pm and 6 am, I wake up three or four times to pee. Prostate Problem. And at that time, I invariably look at this clock to note the time: “How long more need I to be in bed?” running at the back of my mind.

Last night I got up around 1 am. Looked at the table clock. Something strange. It was showing only 11:45 – just one hour after falling asleep? Worried, I went back to resume sleep. Second time I got up, I stared at it, as it was still showing same time! Shit! The clock has stopped. Took a torch, went to the hall and confirmed the time was 3:30 am from a larger clock mounted on the wall.

I note the time when I wake up for another reason. Something strange – theft, break-in, accident, transformer blast, stray dog biting a stranger  etc could happen,-  there could be some un-decipherable noise / sound etc – and the next day it could become the talk of the neighbourhood. Noting the time to tell police or others will become handy.

Talking about this clock, I cannot hide my misgivings. I bought a rectangular piece. Worst buy. You can never read the time easily. One more buyer’s remorse. The next piece I plan buy (for my daughter) will have a perfectly circular face / dial.

Talking of dials, if you care to do some Window Shopping online, for wall clocks, you fill come across several interesting inspirational quotes etched on the dial plates. Some I liked are given below:

Enjoy Life: One Moment at a time

Choose to look at the brighter Side

Live in the moment

You are his masterpiece

Trust God’s Timing

Happy Moments – Praise God

Difficult Moments – Seek God

Quiet Moments – Worship God

Painful Moments – Trust God

Every Moment – Thank God

Pen Container is a harem

Pen Container is a harem

I have ceramic mug full of pens and pencils on my work desk. It has more than twenty writing instruments of various sorts – ball pens, Ink pens, pencils – black, coloured, use and throw pens etc. It is further cluttered with pen caps, rubber bands, few paper clips etc. Except a couple of ordinary pens that I use regularly, right next to laptop in the ‘rough’ note book, all others are a real waste. The pen stand looks like a harem – unused and underused!

Harem and pen stand are similar. Take a Look at the reasons:

There is a lot of variation & variety in the collection

·      Of different shapes, sizes and colours

·      In their usefulness when they were acquired first and now

·      Their weight – light thin attractive pleasant / unpleasant to handle

·      Frequency of use – some never touched again, some held tight many times

·      Some seem right suiting to one’s moods

·      Some are clogged, dry, dirty and unattractive

·      Some have life to last a long affair

·      Some fulfil emotional needs and have a story to tell or recollect - gift, theft etc

Nizam of Hyderabad is known to have had more than 100 wives in his harem. But I see you can own a harem of pens and pencils - simply by collecting but not using them much.

Google Maps and Bing Maps

Google Maps and Bing Maps

You may search for nearby vendors for things / services to buy using maps. For instance if you want to hire housemaids, Ayahs, semi qualified nurses, bedside assistants and the like you get info about hiring agencies while searching maps. Both Bing and Google are good at trapping neighbourhood service providers.

When you see the list of vendors you may like to print out a list with or without locations in the map. Bing gives an option to print only the text (no map) but Google always insists on printing with map included. By 'printing' you may  save the results as a pdf, not necessarily output on paper in a printer.

Once you have chosen a vendor you can find out the path to reach him from your house, using various means like walking, biking, cab / car, public bus etc - knowing approx time it may take.

In fact I have walked my way to meeting locations using the map on my mobile as a guide, during pre-covid days. How many of you are comfortable using maps?

TO CC BCC - What is your Choice?

TO CC BCC - What is your Choice?

When you send an email to many people and many groups, where do you mention all the recipients? You have a choice of putting them in TO, CC, BCC fields.

You may put all email Ids in the TO field. When the receiver replies' all', then all your friends get the reply. This may not be desirable. You are also exposing all your friends to spammers. Some recipient may, without thinking,  reply all - this may include a group to which he is not a subscriber - then the message will bounce.

If you put some in bcc, those mentioned in TO or CC fields won't know others who are included. There is a possibility of the message being forwarded again, due to this ignorance.
If a person in BCC replies to all, then the secrecy is gone.

I have been experimenting with different options but have not come to any conclusions.

Showering of seeds and fruits

Showering of seeds and fruits

We have trees like Neem, Coconut, Ashoka and Mango. When fruits ripen they fall down. It is fun to watch the rain / shower of fruits during winds / rains. Coconut trees let go ripened fruits with a great thud. This happens mostly at night. Next morning we search and take the fallen ones. My neighbor's son is mighty afraid of coming near the tree lest a coconut falls on his head. I read that chances of a coconut falling on your head are almost nil - 1 in 270,000,000 !

Neem tree flushes out lots of flowers, raw and ripened fruits at the slightest disturbance. They are so plentiful that once my terrace was paved with a green carpet, soft and smooth.  With Ashoka, (we have two of these) it is really raining flowers and fruits.

Let me come to Mango, my favorite. This season we have been more than blessed. Everyday, just the fallen ones' count averages to 15. Unfortunately nearly half of them break when reaching the ground. They fall on the terrace, sunshades, plastic roof over water tank, on to metal drainage cover and of course on plain earth. The sound they produce on hitting the floor is different each time and varies with the time - day or night. During the night, I keep waking up due to this fruit-falling phenomenon, keeping a mental count as to how many I should expect to collect the next morning. The actual will be more than my count, of course.

After such a bountiful collection, disposal is a problem. We give them away to friends. We have covered every household nearby, every person we can think of, in this task. Raddhi fellow, paper boy, milk supplier, servants around - no one is spared. And they thank us for thinking of them. Still our kitchen table / dining hall smells like a fruit shop for most of the time. That's why we should remove the rotten ones quickly.

What is your experience of fruit falling? Pleasant or fearsome? WHY?

How did I pursue my MLibSc?

How did I pursue my MLibSc?

One day in early 1984, one young librarian from APSRTC Library called Ramachandran, came to my house for a chat. He inquired about myself, my qualifications etc. When he knew I was ‘only’ a BLibSc, he was shocked. He said that Prof Tikekar, Librarian, Bombay University is in the city, he is going back to Bombay today by flight and if I meet him, he may help get a seat in MLibSc in Bombay University. He urged that I should do it as it is part time – minimal attendance – and highly suited for working librarians. Quickly, I set off to meet Prof Tikekar at the Airport, which was in Begumpet those days. I caught him for hardly five minutes before he moved in for a security check but then he asked me to apply.

Some weeks later I had to attend a personal interview in Bombay for selection for MLibSc admission. There was some problem with Railways – strike, I don’t remember – and had to go by bus. The bus reached late and I hurried into the interview hall, informed that I had arrived, I was ushered in hurriedly – it was 2:00 pm and they were closing the interview! Seeing me, Prof Tikekar said: We were wondering why you did not come! You look so tired out of Bus travel, you must be hungry too. Go and refresh yourself, we will meet at 3:00 pm. At 3:00 when I went again, they said, as if in Chorus: “If you have not come, we could have done nothing for you, glad that you could make it. Go and collect details from the office, pay the fee and join.”

After the interview, I went to IDL guest house for an overnight stay. I had not booked my return journey – no trains, only bus again. There, I met Sri CS Hariharan, Finance Controller in IDL. When he enquired about my visit, I narrated all the story. He said: Don’t worry – you can fly back to Hyderabad.  He asked our Bombay office to book my flight ticket and reach it to me in the guest house! I was not a senior person then and the entire office was agog over special concessions shown to me!

Then I joined the course, visited Bombay a couple of times, wrote the exam and completed the course. However, here is the equally interesting second part:

I had to do a project and submit a thesis for 400 marks. (300 for thesis and 100 for Viva). During the initial months when I submitted interim reports on my project work, the guide (the same Prof Tikekar) made a number of adverse / critical comments on my output that I was terribly put off. I even contemplated pulling out of the course. While my friend Sivaram was responsible for pushing me and coaxing me to do MLibSc, it was Thomas (now Dr Thomas) who kept nudging me to overlook Guide's comments and continue. For my project work I had done a survey of library automation activities in Hyderabad. In those days, next only to ICRISAT, IDL Library had a great reputation for using computers for library work.

IDL treated me with very special kindness. Apart from the Interview episode narrated above, I was given leave with pay for two and half months for attending contact classes in Bombay, stay & travel expenses reimbursed, all fees reimbursed etc. As I was so pampered (no one else got this privilege) failing in the exams or pulling out was next to impossible as the damage to my image would be irreparable.  I had learnt (from one lecturer called Rekha) on my first day of contact classes in Bombay that no one had passed the course in preceding several years. I took the advice of Thomas and continued. With jitters I prepared for the exams, after a gap of 19 years of leaving College!

After writing four theory papers, there were two clear days with nothing to do before Viva. I went through my dissertation completely. I had meticulously noted down all points of probable attack by the jury and how I would answer them. During the Viva Dr Prof Kamath (Ex of BARC) who was the IT expert among examiners, simplified the whole show by saying: "Your thesis might have fetched you a PhD. Unfortunately, you have submitted it for MLibSc". I was mighty happy.

A month later I got a greeting card from a fellow MLibSc student which said: "Congratulations for topping the MLibSc Class". Only then I knew I got first class first rank! That evening when I went home, my wife hugged me with such warmth that hadn't seen anything like that before! My happiness knew no bounds.

Lifegoeson - New Website for the elderly

LIFE GOES ON - a new website for senior citizens

Capt KP Haridasan, retired from the Navy, has started an outfit based in Thane to help senior citizens to age usefully and productively. His organisation offers various types of therapies like dance therapy, organises picnics to bird watching sites, helps in second career if they want to be gainfully employed and a host of other facilities and services.

To serve this end a website http://lifegoeson.in has been started recently. I find lot of useful information of relevance and use to retirees here: hobbies, helplines, old age homes, details of 150 newspapers, articles on writing will etc. The content, for the present, is Thane focused and Defence retirees in particular. NRI parents also get preference, for example they will help with identifying travel companions for elderly single women travelers.

There are articles inspiring elders to take up hobbies, how to spend time usefully etc. RTI is another topic that seniors may find useful as they have many things to complain with govt departments.

I wish they add content on financial matters including advice on investments, property purchase, safety and security, associations, learning opportunities,  discussion groups, volunteering etc. Plenty of websites talk of health and medicine, so this may  be skipped initially.

Please visit the website to check for yourself what interests you.

How to avoid getting unnecessary email messages?

How to avoid getting unnecessary email messages?

Sometimes we do not want to entertain messages from a few people. How to ensure that we do not even spend time in deleting the messages that we do not want to read? Here are a few tips.

If the messages are regular in the form of a 'list' or 'forum' you can unsubscribe using the unsubscribe link at the bottom of such messages. Generally it serves well. You won't be bothered with further mail.

If you open an undesirable message, click three vertical dots at the top near the Reply button. You will find options like Block the sender, Report Spam, Report Phishing, Filter such messages etc They work well.  If you block a sender, please also take care to delete his address from your contacts, if it is there.

Spam is unsolicited bulk mail meant for nobody in particular. Just sent in expectation of a few gullible guys out of thousands of recipients responding. When you mark a message as SPAM, be careful. Make sure you are removing the actual sender and not the group / list.

You may even set up a clever filter to catch messages sneaking into your inbox by sending them to bin  or trash automatically. You can identify phishing, if you are patient, by clicking 'see original' and pouring over those from / to entries.

If you are owner or Manager or Administrator of a list or a group you can ban or remove a member. You can say that all messages must be routed through you for a specified time to 'moderate' his messages. If you are just a member you may request the admin to do the needful.

If you have some tips, please share.

Pandemic in India and Pandemonium in the Heavens

I am posting a brief narrative showing how the current covid situation has created pandemonium among gods, written by my friend Sri S Sathyamoorthy. He is a member of SSSG ISU3A etc. Hope you enjoy it. A bit too long but you will sure love to read it!

====

Pandemic in India and Pandemonium in the Heavens
(by S Sathyamoorthy)

There was pandemonium  in the heavens. The Indian Covid harvest had destabilized the placid routine there.

Chitragupta was seething with anger. His work had fallen heavily in arrears in April thanks to humans falling like straw in the hospital compounds and ICU wards. Chitragupta’s brief was to square the accounts of the deceased every day. He was on top of the job when the death rate was ten percent the current number. He also found the job to become boring. There was no variety in the reasons for death- no accidents, no suicides, no deaths on the table, no child birth casualties, no typhoid, no…no…no due to lock downs , closed skies, sealed borders and HBW. People remained indoors to deny variety and time to Chitagupta. Covid corpses were waiting outside hell and heaven awaiting the individual reckoning of accounts by the Lord of the balance sheet. Sage Narada was breaking news in all the seven worlds, of the celestial break down of heavenly routine. Suras and Asuras were planning to hold a High Level meeting in the heavens to combat the crisis a la our Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, Health Secretaries, High Courts, Supreme Court, Governors, DG AIMMS et al.

Lord Yama , the kindest of all Gods had also started despairing with the unprecedented rate of casualties. His strong arms had started aching trying to pull and transport lakhs of dead bodies from thousands of hospitals, mortuaries ICUs and crematoria everyday from all corners of the country. Yama was delivering his assigned role without extra help or extra hours. More importantly the bodies were piling up on the way to heaven and hell demanding extra pull. More significantly the rope he was hitherto using was snapping at places, increasing the chances of the body hurtling  back to the hospital on terra firma. Lord Yama also hated to rope in techies and youngsters who were dying in larger numbers in the second wave.

The worst of all was the protest by Lord Shiva who was threatening to stop the Dance of Death. His dancing legs were swollen . His wrist ached with hair line cracks. Sage Dhanvantri, the celestial physician declined to bandage Shiva’s wrists  or legs as Dhanvantri could not find a consulting slot for Shiva. Sage Dhanvantri, busy with several lakhs of devotees still in the hospitals  opined  there was no emergency for Lord of Dance.  Lord Shiva the angry God  rushed to Sage Sushrushta, the celestial surgeon. Sage Sushrusta advised him to consult Ramdev in Haridwar. Anger reaching new heights Lord Shiva danced more vigorously and viciously resulting in more covid deaths in mortuaries and crematoria though it increased his swelling in the legs and wrist.

Lord Brahma was wondering how he would replace new souls for the old departed souls to retain the specie balance in this world. His creative genius was significantly strained. He did not have enough raw material for replacement creation.  For Lord Brahma  the only succour of reliable consultation and source of supply seemed to be Adar Poonawala’s Serum Institute for mass replacement. Lord Brahma also wondered whether there was any conspiracy as was whispered into his ears by Sage Narada. Narada had mentioned Pathal Log was planning to overthrow and replace him.But Lord Brahma had a more pressing and stressful task to care instantly. Goddess Saraswati, let me mention her to keep up the gender balance, was refusing to talk to or meet Lord Brahma. The silent war had raged for a month . Goddess Saraswati was unhappy that all educational institutions were closed in April and exams were postponed with the result students were not remembering Saraswati or praying to her.

Suras and Asuras abounding in heavens had difficulty in differentiating between saints and sinners amongst the dead since there was an overload of dead bodies and most of them reported with the double masks a la Biden. Suras and Asuras were worried that they may take the wrong soul to the wrong destination. They were considering demanding Unique ID number or Aadhar card for use in the heaven. But how to connect with the Indian NICor Nilakeni?

Godmen and God women in the heavens were also dejected that temples ,churches, mosques and viharas were shut down for days and weeks as per the whims of politicians and non secular political parties without consulting their clan. Even Ram Navami could not be celebrated. Obviously Gurus, Sadhus, Agadas, Pastors,  Bishops, Arch Bishops, Maulvis, Maulanas, Nirankaris,et al were planning a congregation in the seven worlds

In the midst of all these pandemonium Ram Jethmalani was adding to confusion by demanding Supreme  Council of Gods to be constituted as the deceased  belonged to all religions. Jethmalani sahib missed the courts of law to appeal for this.Tulsi concurred and mentioned that Gods were more effective in Treta , Dwabara and Satya Yug than they were now. One RIL-Religious Interest Litigation was getting drafted with Indian help.

There was one silver line in this confusion. The whole heaven was happy with Narendra Modi and Election Commission for holding the general elections and the grand Kumbh Mela without postponement or second thought. This was hat trick for Modi after demonetization and migrant labor mismanagement as it was hat trick for Mamta in West Bengal.

As usual Maha Vishnu was reclining on his snake bed with his equanimity with the usual smile dancing on his face. Mahalakshmi was also happy that wealth changed hands faster in the Covid times in the health circuit.

Interactive Fun Session for Seniors

Interactive Fun Session for Seniors

Yesterday, I participated in an online interactive Fun session targeting seniors. The website https://seenage.life hosts every Saturday at 10:30 am IST this inspiring event. The event host, you won't believe, is a 13 year old school kid from California, who happens to be the grandson of Smt Kamakshi Hatti.  Today's program details are given in the attached invite. You may look up for details of future fun sessions at the website.

Under the section Gardening at home  we were taught how to plant Almond. Every step was explained, described and demonstrated in great detail. The process is pretty simple. Wrap an almond in a piece of kitchen towel, fold it, wet it, keep aside for a couple days until a small spout appears. Then place the seed horizontally in garden dirt (mud) about an inch below the surface, water it and wait.  You can watch them grow with wonderment within a few days. As the plant grows you may have to move it to bigger containers. He also showed avocado  plants grown by him.

There was a singing session. Upon a suggestion of a word, any participant may sing a song where the word comes in the lyrics. Many sang cheerfully including some kids! Talinn also demonstrated how to paint rocks (small stones or big pebbles) with pastel colors and write some inspiring positive words / phrases on the painted surface. He took a reasonable hand sized black stone, painted it with yellow and wrote Smile in black ink. The result was imply marvelous and pleasing.

I found Talinn Hatti fascinating as a talented host. Whether it is fluency in his speech beating any seasoned magician, ability to imagine the requirements of the audience and focus rightly on objects under discussion, lighting them properly or making himself audible without interruption while moving, or mastering demo techniques (for instance, the stone has to be painted many times after each time after drying and this would take a long time, he took an already fully painted and dried stone for continuation!) etc -- what really floored me, I can not say. Due to paucity of time I had to withdraw without spending entire hour, I am sure those other 21 participants are luckier!

How to handle death news?

How to handle death news?

This post has been prompted after hearing the news about the demise of my dear friend Sri IVLN Chary yesterday. He died on 12th April 2021and I learnt about it on 24th through Sro NV Murthy

One of the most striking issues in old age is getting the news of a dear friend or the other passing away. Death, as birth, is happening all the time, as a matter of routine as ever. During the pre-retirement days, death news is accepted as a matter of routine: someone gets married, elected, elevated, defeated etc, or some known person dies. The impact is minimal and short. But in old age, we tend to add another dimension: When is our time to depart this earth?

Though death is a constant unexpressed fear in all human beings, it is highly pronounced as we near it. The judgement is given but not the date / time and we are constantly reminded of it with each obituary news. That's awful and nagging.

When you get the news of the demise of a dear colleague what do you do? Offer condolences to family members; discuss about it with close friends; lament about it in fora and meetings; recollect good things that pop up and share them with common friends.

What else can you do? You may write a journal entry in your diary. You may write an obit note to some newsletter of the association of some group. You may note the date of death just like the date of birth in your online calendar. Bring out his greatness in appropriate forums by pertinent observations, anecdotes etc

In short we need to learn to celebrate death in positive ways. Collect funds and institute an award, prize, scholarship etc for a cause that was dear to the dead person. Motivate the family and beneficiaries to  perpetuate the dead person's memory via memorials or long lasting activities. Let not death deter us but move us to positive celebrative action.

Tapovani - A podcast for Senior Citizens, largely in Tamil

Tapovani - A podcast for Senior Citizens, largely in Tamil

Tapovani is a podcast hosted on I-Radio platform recently in March 2021. This has been started by one Sreedhar, 74, a resident of Tapovan Senior Citizens Foundation in Madhampatty near Coimbatore with some fifteen volunteers, all seniors!. Within five weeks of launch, it has 47 podcasts, mostly in Tamil. The content ranges from speeches, interviews, group interactions, musical events etc. Statistics for the site is impressive: 600 visitors - 95% from India - mostly from Chennai, Coimbatore, Bengaluru. It has the distinction of being the first podcast in the country exclusively devoted to the elderly.

Of late interest in podcasts has increased a lot in India. There are more than 25 podcasts catering to various tastes. Platforms like Spotify, Castbox,  Google Podcasts and Anchor.fm etc have amazing content with podcasts in a wide ranging topics like food, travel, Bollywood, TV, health, news etc.  Tapovani may be added to all such aggregators sites also.

Some suggestions to Tapovani: There is no provision for comments by visitors or feedback. I listened to the talk on Karadaiyan Nonbu - interesting facts. The delivery was very clear and impactful. In other podcast aggregation sites, we find extra facilities like Time stamps, notes, transcript, references, Infographs etc. For instance visit: coreimpodcast.com

Seniors Citizens may well listen to such podcasts and develop different  ways of spending time to ward off loneliness. I congratulate Sreedhar and his team for their contribution to Seniors' Community.

Collective Wisdom on the use of oil lamp in the Puja Room

Collective Wisdom on the use of oil lamp in the Puja Room

I asked my friends in a discussion group to help me solve certain problems in using the oil lamps in Puja room. Questions like: Which type of wick is good? What type of oils give best results? How to avoid incomplete flame cessation? How to avoid black or green deposits in the lamp surface? What is the best way of keeping the lamp clean? How to prevent wick slipping down the stem? What are the factors improving the duration of burning? Where to buy good supplies?  The cumulative experience and wisdom shared by my friends is summarised here. I thank Sri Khanapur Krishna Rao, Sri SV Ramana, Smt Indu Priyadarsini, Sri Seshadri and Sri KS Srinivasan for their contributions.

Wick:

·       Threaded wicks will slip. Avoid them. Use cotton wicks

·       Use them thick enough by combining many strands to fit well into the stem

·       Wick must be thin and long. Flame end must be sharp. Fitted just enough part is exposed to yield a pearl like flame.

·       Free end of the wick must be in oil almost at the bottom of the stem to give maximum duration of burning – to ensure no oil is left after flame cessation

·       Change wicks once in three days

Oil:

·       Pure Gingeli oil or Cow Ghee is the best. Oil from traditional cold press is preferable.

·       They leave no deposits green or black

·       Oil must be enough to soak entire wick; Smaller stem saves oil

·       Refined Dhara Groundnut oil is the choice of one for decades!

Lamp:

·       Clean the lamp with Pitambari powder or soap and water; use a brush to remove black soot stains etc. Tamarind will remove green deposits

·       Use old cloth to wipe it dry

·       4 inch dia, half inch deep AshtaLakshmi brass Lamp – filled with 75% lasts for 20 hours

·       Using a small silver disk / washer near the bottom of the lamp will prevent green deposits

·       Lamp flame may be protected against wind by covering it with a glass cover used in Kerosene hurricane lamps

·       Use terracotta (burnt mud) lamps to avoid green deposits

 Shops & supplies:

·       Amazon sells cotton wicks soaked in ghee at Rs 300 for a pack of 100 wicks

·       Puja shops in Bengaluru have variety of lams to choose from

·       So called Puja Oil sold in ordinary shops & super bazars are adulterated mixed oils,  that includs Soya, sunflower, rice bran, groundnut etc Not preferable at all.

·       A shop outside Parthasarathy temple in Chennai is acclaimed to be the best stocked shop for all Puja items
