Half loaf and Half Pack – Will they come back?

Half loaf and Half Pack – Will they come back?

(Smaller packs are meaningful)

Some decades ago, we used to buy half a loaf of bread. Modern Bread, from a public sector company, used to sell smaller than usual full packs containing 16 pieces - containing just about half that quantity – called half-loaf . That has disappeared. Smaller packs were convenient to handle; we could just buy enough for a session, be it breakfast or evening snack. Convenient for bachelors and single persons. Always fresh and not much of a wastage. Wonder why that has been discontinued.

I buy frequently, semi cooked, ready to heat and types of chapati. Famous brands are ID and SV products.  They are sold in supermarkets in specially sealed packs of ten pieces per pack. Here again, consumers will stand to gain if smaller packs of five-piece packs are sold. It is suitable for couples, bachelors and students.

The manufacturer could – as is the usual practice – to price the smaller packs slightly more than just half the quantity and buyers won't mind it. Convenience, cost per pack, avoidance of wastage are important factors. Sales would increase as different consumer segments are taken care of.

Even now, half loaf is available in small bakeries as an unbranded variety. Cleanliness and hygiene may be sacrificed if we buy from non-standard vendors. We can not risk it when it comes to food as it affects our health. Big bakeries with a name to reckon with are available but the cost would be high.

I only wish some manufacturers are listening and they will bring back the changes needed by the consumers.
