Obituary Note - Krishnaswamy Sivaram

Obituary: Krishnaswamy Sivaram
(March 1944-March 2020)

Sivaram is gone. Fifty years of friendship. Cannot be forgotten or written off just like that.

Decades ago, he had come to see me as a sales rep, which is much before our association in Indian Detonators Limited. While he was selected for a job in Electronics Dept, his boss was warned: ‘you are hiring someone with better qualifications than you; he may outsmart you’ to which the boss said: “If he is that smart I don’t mind working under him”. Siva managed: real smartness lies in being smart in making boss feel he is smarter.

Sivaram is a teacher, singer, friend and a highly respected employee. He had varied interests like: cricket, music, politics etc He was jovial, talkative, spiritual (ardent Abhyasi of  Sri Ramachandra Mission) and above all a very loving human being.

As a singer, people remember his sweet voice. Read what Suren said yesterday: “He sang a beautiful song at our 2015 Annual Meet at Taj Belson: Aa mil ke chalen ik aise gagan ke talley, jahan pyar hi pyar mile... “

He taught at IIT Roorki  from where he graduated (Alma mater to Sri RN Mital  as well), Osmania university, IETE and elsewhere. I had occasions to meet his past students, talking highly of him.

His interest in cricket and politics made him stick to TV for long hours, which became a perfect companion in his lonely years as a divorcee. Strange as it may appear, he married Prema, got divorced and remarried her – as both realized that they had taken a hasty decision.

He was a great friend. He bonded with me because of the independent, progressive or unconventional thinker in me. I am privy to many ups and downs in his life – legal battles, marital  discord, misunderstandings with his daughter and the like.

He was jovial, always smiling and had many rare jokes to share. His companions during company bus travel will always recall those unforgettable days.

Smt Sarojini Narasimhan was choking with emotion when breaking the news to me. His schoolmate in our colony could not sleep that night. Not without reason, condolence messages on receipt of the news about his demise swelled up in no time.  Some of these are given in the attachment.

Except being cathartic at the moment, I can only pray that his soul rests in HIM.
