One Big Family - OBF App for Seniors

ONE BIG FAMILY APP - OBF
Wesco releases OBF App in Hyderabad

OBF App - One Big Family:  Connects Senior Citizens with family

OBF App for Android Smart Phones was launched on 19th April 2019 in Hyderabad in an event where the chief guest was Sri Jayesh Ranjan IAS Principal Secretary, IT, Telangana. Developed by Wesco Technologies P Limited, the App is free to download. A senior citizen, living alone, can register himself and others - who are care givers like son, daughter or friend living away from the senior citizen who may help him remotely.

You can book a cab or buy food using Swiggy connected restaurants, get an appointment for a doctor or have medicines or groceries delivered to you at your doorstep at a discount, make online purchases again at unbelievable discounts, get someone to provide home care if you are ill or
bedridden, pay bills, find companions for live-in or marriage, even try for a job full time or part time or plan a leisure round trip via flights / trains – well, the list is really limitless. The App eliminates the need for using different Apps for different needs.

The App really integrates several service providers through a single platform. It is very easy to learn and use. You may set reminders, share your location; get help in emergencies via SOS hotline – all in a jiffy. Few additional features help you to learn about future events, read latest news, book a surprise gift for your loved one etc. Another special facility is to adopt grandparent – this is for youngsters, much like a similar program offered by HelpAge India.

In short OBF App is a boon to link up senior citizens with children and friends in a seamless fashion.

Support systems for the elderly

Support Systems for the Elderly

Yesterday in SCF I was fortunate to listen to a very informative and highly inspirational speech by Smt Parmarthi Padmavathy, head of local office of Kasturba National Memorial Trust, Hyderabad. She is a down to earth type of social activist in the field of Child and women welfare. She runs one old age home and has lot of experience in elder, child, women abuse. Her illustrious biodata made me perk up to listen to every word she had to deliver.

In brief I learnt:

GHMC Vikasam Cell (meant for disabled ) gives ID card that helps you buy medicines at 40% discount
Helpline 181 for emergency care for women works 24 X 7 right from rescuing the victim wherever she is and putting her safe shelter
With the help of RDO / MRO / Collector one can get legal guardian allotted to you
Dist Collector gives Rs 2 Lakhs for construction of building for any SCA
National Emergency Helpline 112 is yet to take off fully
She has a lot of info to share - OAH, Bedside Assistants, Anganwadi etc

She gave lot more info, much of which I knew , so I am not including them here as I have always been sharing what I know!!

Her advice to seniors:
Never write your assets away when you are alive
register your WILL and keep it a secret
Reduce dependency on others absolutely to minimum
Become self reliant and be bold to live your life as you like

How to show your affection to elders

How to show your affection to elders?

I answer many questions relating to senior citizens in Quora.
Above question warranted a blog post. In the following enumeration, he or she refers to  he, she or they - any elderly person, closely related and living with you in the same household.

  1. Cook his favorite dish and serve it with love.
  2. Offer to get his clothes pressed / cleaned / washed.
  3. Remind him of appointments that he may forget.
  4. If he/she appears stressed say a few kind words to assuage him.
  5. Help them with small errands – offer to buy things when you go out.
  6. Ask her advice even in small matters.
  7. Take her to doctor, movie, shopping, park, walk etc
  8. Give him small surprise gifts often, specially things he is fond of
  9. Appreciate his good deeds like donation or his memory or his choice / circle of friends.
  10. Tell how you value him as a person, how indispensable he is, how his company makes you happy. Show you are not thinking of him or her as a hindrance in your life.
  11. Value his thoughts / ideas / preferences even when they differ from yours.
  12. Avoid all arguments, small or big.
  13. Don’t put him down in front of others – discuss differences in private.
  14. If he is proud of his age, allow him that pleasure instead of visualizing him as an oldie.
  15. Show concern when he is ill – give medicine, prepare diet food, make his bed
  16. Get him books to read or screen his favorite movie on home theater
  17. Pay attention to her innate fears, unexpressed concerns.
  18. Be patient while listening to him; allow him find words / expressions; help him with prompts rarely

Ageing gracefully - Advice from Sivasankari

https://youtu.be/4Pwc9h5v51g

Please see this video. It is in Tamil. Sivasankari who is the speaker
is a well known Tamil Writer. She gives sane advice not to become
overly dependent on others in your life. She explains how ageing is
only in our minds. Talks of one Mary kom, 82 who served her as an
escort in Phonix Arizona for three days during Sivasankari's visit to
USA. Mary drove her own car, took sivasankari to several places daily,
had time to bake cake for 25 children, had time to write accounts in
an NGO etc. During their interaction Siva asked Mary a few doubts
about some plants / trees. Mary felt there were gaps in her knowledge, went ahead and signed up for a course to help her to be fully equipped as an escort to foreigners!!

I thank Mrs Sarojini Narasimhan for alerting me on this video.
