Chandigarh: Haryana has instituted five awards carrying a cash prize of Rs. one lakh each for its senior citizens.
Individuals who are above 90 years and still contributing to society would be felicitated with Chaudhary Ranbir Singh Centenarian Award, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Geeta Bhukkal announced on Sunday.
Mother Teresa Award would be given to mothers who had fought against all odds so that their children might fulfill their dreams while senior citizens displaying extraordinary courage in difficult situations would be presented with Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Courage and Bravery Award, she said.
Panchayats which had done pioneering work for the cause of the elderly would receive Mahatma Gandhi Panchayat Award.
Mahatma Jyotiya Phoole Lifetime Achievement Award would be given to those senior citizens who had worked for the welfare of the aged.
A four-member panel has been constituted to scrutinise applications received for these awards which would be given away every year, she said. -- PTI
